Design and Build contract with NUI Maynooth .........

NUI Maynooth awarded the contract for the Design & Build of the new Student Common Room to MDY Construction on 9th July 2009. Work is to commence on 20th July 2009 and is scheduled for completion at the end of September 2009, in time for the commencement of the academic year.
The building is a steel-framed, single-storey, structure with rendered masonry walls, extensive curtain walling, and canopied external seating areas. Other features include Kalzip mono pitch roof with aluminium gutters and fascia, cedar soffit, and cedar brise-soleils The building is to be fully M+E serviced and integrated into the campus service infrastructure.
MDY Construction has engaged Malone O'Regan Consulting Engineers to carry out structural design and perform the duties of PSDP. Keaveny Engineering Services will oversee the design and installation of the Mechanical and Electrical installations.
The contract represents a number of firsts for the company:-
♦ The first (New) Public Works Contract Designed by the Contractor undertaken by MDY.
♦ The first contract with NUI Maynooth.
♦ The first project undertaken in a third-level campus.
"The experience built up by the company over the years across a broad range of projects in all spheres will make this project relatively easy. Nevertheless, there is an added sense of responsibility and commitment within the MDY team to ensure that none of these "firsts" become "first and last", stated Pat Cosgrove, Managing Director, at the inauguration meeting.
The MDY team is led by Mel O'Reilly, with Denis Lahart (Contracts Manager), Graham Prole (Site Manager), and Tom Dunne, Senior QS for the company.
Meeting the required end-date, given the proximity of the starting date to the annual builders' holidays, and the extremely tight timeframe, will be a considerable challenge.
