European Commissioner, Charlie McCreevy, officially opened the new production facility built by MDY Construction for Curragh Carpets in Newbridge, Co. Kildare.

Curragh Tintawn Carpets, part of the Axminster Group, has been making carpets in Newbridge since the 1940s. The move to the new purpose-built plant facilitates the re-development of the existing premises located in the town centre. The new facility, consisting of separate warehouse and production buildings incorporates extensive offices for both production and sales staff. There were significant development works on this large sloping site, including, as is now customary, a large surface water attenuation tank.

The buildings, designed by Malone O’Regan, are steel frame structures with a mixture of Kingspan cladding materials to the elevations.

The most complex part of the project related to the structures and services required for the installation of the large looms, which are at the heart of the manufacturing process. The looms and other equipment were located from the existing facility – a difficult exercise given the constraints of maintaining manufacturing capacity as long as possible and the sheer size of some pieces of equipment. MDY Construction assisted in the co-ordination of the re-location. Thankfully, everything went smoothly and the new plant became operational on the target date.
